Two-component reagents have been specially developed to utilize the high titer stability of a pure iodine solution. In addition to this advantage, they offer a very fast titration process due to the use of ideally buffered solvent systems.
Composition
In two-component reagents, the Karl Fischer reactants are divided into two solutions: the titrant and the solvent. Hydranal titrant contains iodine in a precisely defined concentration dissolved in an alcohol. Hydranal solvent is an alcoholic solution of sulphur dioxide and imidazole. The alcohol used for this is either methanol for the standard reagents or ethanol for the E-types. Other solvent types based on different solvent mixtures enable individual adaptation to the requirements of specific sample materials.
