Hydranal composite contains all the required reactants such as iodine, sulphur dioxide, and the bases imidazole and 2-methylimidazole, dissolved in diethylene glycol monoethyl ether (DEGEE). The use of the mixture imidazole/2-methylimidazole improves stability and prevents crystallization. Crystallization was occasionally observed under the influence of humidity or after the reagent had remained in the tubing system of the Karl Fischer titrator for a longer period of time and could impair the titrator performance. This negative effect is avoided by a new, improved formulation.
Hydranal composite is stabilized by DEGEE as a solvent and additionally by the use of the base mixture. When comparing the old and new formulation, it is clear that the new formulation is considerably more stable and the annual loss of concentration has been significantly reduced.
