Hydranal composite contains all the necessary reactants such as iodine, sulfur dioxide, and the bases imidazole and 2-methylimidazole , dissolved in diethylene glycol monoethyl ether (DEGEE). The use of the imidazole/2-methylimidazole mixture improves stability and prevents crystal formation. Crystallization was occasionally observed under the influence of atmospheric humidity or after the reagent had remained in the tubing system of the Karl Fischer titrator for a long time and could impair the titrator performance. This negative effect is avoided by a new, improved formula.

Hydranal-Composite is stabilized by DEGEE as a solvent and additionally by the use of the base mixture. When comparing the old and new formulation, it becomes clear that the new formulation is significantly more stable and the annual loss of concentration has been significantly reduced.
