A single-component reagent offers the greatest flexibility in the choice of medium in the titration cell. This means that the required solvent is selected according to the chemical or solubility properties of the sample substance to be analyzed. The most commonly used medium is dry methanol. The speed of the Karl Fischer reaction and its tendency to side effects are also influenced by the medium used in the titration vessel. The hydranal composite one-component reagents are already buffered to an optimum pH using imidazoles to ensure a fast and error-free Karl Fischer titration. However, adjusting the solvent in the titration cell provides further scope for method improvement.
Many non-polar samples (e.g. oils, fats, organic components) are poorly soluble in methanol and require the addition of a solubilizer. A range of special media has been developed for this application, based on the most suitable solvents in an optimum mixing ratio.
