The Karl Fischer reaction is pH-dependent, with the ideal pH range being 5-7.5. Strongly acidic samples slow down the#reaction or cause side reactions such as esterification and must be neutralized by adding a suitable buffer in#the titration cell. Strong bases can raise the pH in the sample. If the buffering capacity of the#reagent is exceeded as a result, the titration will not reach any end points or will only reach them slowly. Strong bases must also be neutralized by#using a suitable buffer.
