BrillianceTM E. coli/Coliform Selective Agar can be used for the detection and bacterial count of E. coli and coliforms in food and water samples.

Summary

BrillianceTM E. coli/Coliform Selective Agar contains two chromogenic substrates:

• Rose-Gal – for the detection of β-galactosidase activity
• X-Glu – for the detection of β-glucuronidase activity; t

In addition, the culture medium contains sodium lauryl sulphate, which acts as a selective agent to suppress the growth of gram-positive organisms.

Test principle

The ability of the majority of coliforms to utilize lactose enables the cleavage of the chromogen Rose-Gal, which causes the colonies to turn pink. E. coli also expresses β-glucuronidase, which is highly specific for this organism and is therefore used to differentiate it from other coliforms. The target for the enzyme is the X-Glu – chromogen.
