Specially manufactured and packaged, Thermo Scientific™ silylation-grade solvents meet the demanding requirements of silylation and other sensitive derivatization reactions. Purified, dried and packaged under nitrogen in convenient Thermo Scientific™ Hypo-Vial™ sample storage vials, the solvents are supplied with elastomer septa to allow direct sampling without exposure to moisture and oxygen. Use polar solvents (acetonitrile, dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, pyridine, tetrahydrofuran) to accelerate reactions; nonpolar organic solvents can be used but will not accelerate the reaction rate.
Recommended use
Avoid water and alcohol as TMS reagents react with active hydrogen.
Avoid enolizable ketones.
Use dimethylformamide for steroids and other large molecules.
Use dimethyl sulfoxide to prepare TMS derivatives of tertiary alcohols and some compounds that are poorly soluble in other silylation solvents.
Pyridine is an excellent solvent and reaction medium for MS reactions as well as an HCl acceptor in reactions with organochlorosilanes.
Other commonly used solvents include tetrahydrofuran and acetonitrile.
